Onnoghen: Buhari invites APC senators ahead of Senate's meeting

- President Muhammadu Buhari has invited APC senators to the Presidential Villa

- The president will meet with the senators on Monday, January 28

- The meeting will reportedly focused on the recent suspension of the CJN, Walter Onngohen

Ahead of the Senate's resumption on Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari has invited senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Presidential Villa, Abuja for a meeting over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen.

The senators are reportedly meeting with the president on Monday, January 28, to prepare on how to defend the president's decision to suspend Onnoghen.

The Punch reports that the invitations to the meeting were signed by the director general of the APC presidential campaign organisation, who is also the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

However, an APC source who spoke to the press said: “So, we need to talk to our members in the Senate and impress it on them not to allow Saraki to impose his personal opinion on them.”

APC members of the House of representatives have reportedly scheduled an emergency meeting for Monday as well.

The meeting was called by the majority leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, via text messages on Sunday evening.

Members of the opposition party, PDP have accused the presidency of inviting the APC senators to bribe them ahead of the Senate's meeting on Tuesday.

The PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said: “President Buhari is not only apprehensive that the Senate might sanction him for violating the constitution and usurping its statutory duties regarding the handling of issues related to a CJN, the parliament may also open an inquest into how President Buhari, who parades himself as Mr Integrity, allegedly procured an order from the CCT upon which he announced the illegal suspension of the CJN.

“There are reports that the said order is suspicious and subject to investigations, being not argued or issued in the open court; following which a distressed Buhari Presidency now seeks to corrupt and undermine the Senate.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the National Judicial Council (NJC) reportedly called an emergency meeting over the federal government’s suspension of Walter Onnoghen from the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), over alleged non-declaration of assets before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

The meeting was called by some NJC members in line with its rules and will be held in Abuja by 10am on Monday, January 28.
