Chinua Achebe‘s Things Fall Apart has been listed in BBC’s 100 stories that shaped the world, making it into the top 5. BBC Culture asked writers around the globe to pick stories that have endured across generations and continents – and changed society. Apart from the Nigerian writer’s work, other great African literary works on the list include Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions, and Children of Gebelawi written by Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz.

2. Extra-Judicial Killings: IGP Adamu Orders Police To Work 8 Hours Daily

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has directed that policemen across the country should work for eight hours daily. This, to curtail work-related stress to reduce the misuse of firearms and extrajudicial killings. Adamu gave the directive at the opening of a two-day Conference of Heads of Police Medical Facilities on Thursday in Abuja. Baba News reports that the shift duty structure of the Nigeria police is currently a 12-hour, two shifts system against the eight hours three shift standard.

3. President Buhari Travels To United Kingdom 

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday travelled to the United Kingdom on a ‘private visit,’ according to his media aide Femi Adesina. The Nigerian leader left the country after visiting Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, to commission some projects. According to Adesina, the president would return to Nigeria on 5 May.

4. Buhari To Host FEC Valedictory Session May 22

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Thursday, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari will hold a valedictory session for the members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on May 22, 2019. Disclosing this at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, Mohammed said Buhari would chair the valedictory meeting. The Minister, however, clarified that the valedictory session does not mean that the cabinet will be dissolved on the same day.

5. Senate Decides On Sale Of National Theatre, Tafawa Balewa Square Report

The Senate Thursday reiterated that the National Theatre, Tafawa Balewa Square and other national monuments in Nigeria should not be sold. Baba News understands that the upper legislative chamber reaffirmed its commitment to the non-sale of the national monuments after adopting the report of its Committee on Culture and Tourism at plenary. Chairman of the committee, Senator Fatimat Raji-Rasaki, said the committee traveled to Lagos and other parts of the country to assess the monuments and recommends that, given their historic and monetary value, they should not be disposed of.

6. Drama As Reps Disagree Over NASS Condition Of Service Report

A mild drama occurred at the plenary in the House of Representatives as Hon. Muhammad Abdu insists that a report on the reviewed conditions of service in the National Assembly be stepped down. Baba News reports that the drama started when Speaker Yakubu Dogara called on the Chairman, Conference Committee on the Reviewed Conditions of Service in the National Assembly, Hon. Simon Arabo, to present the report on Thursday.

7. APC Summons Emergency Meeting Over NASS Leadership

The South East zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has summoned an emergency meeting to deliberate on the sharing of leadership positions in the incoming 9th National Assembly. 8. Atiku’s Legal Team Knocks INEC Over Refusal To Produce Polling Documents

The legal team of Atiku Abubakar has decried the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to produce polling documents from the February 23, 2019 presidential election. This comes even after the Court of Appeal had granted an order directing the commission to allow them access.

9. EFCC Arrests 32 Suspected ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ Fraudsters In One Operation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibadan Zonal Office, on Thursday, arrested 32 suspected internet fraudsters, better known as “Yahoo-YahooBoys.” According to the Commission, the suspects were arrested at Liberty Estate, Laderin area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital in an early morning sting operation.

10. 2019 AFCON: Super Eagles ‘Hungry’ – Etebo

Super Eagles star Etebo Oghenekaro has said Nigerian players are “hungry” to play at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Baba News reports. This online news medium had reported that Nigeria were drawn in Group B of the competition with Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi.
